Useful Tips for Self Debt Negotiation
Settlement
If you cannot settle the bills due with your creditors you might want to try your hand at
self debt negotiation settlement. By using debt negotiation advice you open opportunities to creatively find money you need to pay proactively before the harassing phone calls start.
Prior to attempting any negotiations on your debt you will need to prioritize your bills and determine which should be paid first. Look at the due dates and see which ones are due. Doing this will help you plan how to split up your payment and who to focus on first.
Understand that most, if not all, of your creditors would rather negotiate a settlement payment than sell your debt to a collection agency at a discount. Going to court and filing a bankruptcy case against you is not a popular idea with them either. You may have some creditors who do not want to settle so what you need to do is plan how you will communicate with them while actually working with the others who do want to settle. So with the goal of settling your debt with your
creditors you can follow these tips to get there:
- You can make a request from your creditors to allow you to make monthly payments at an amount you can handle. Make sure to get an agreement between you and the creditor in writing. Beware that your account might be indicated on your credit report as on a rolling late
status which means that you are intending to make payments on a partial basis. This will lead to negative credit points on your credit report.
- You will also run into all kinds of scammers during this time. Beware of the collector who is not truthful with you on the actual balance on your account. A good rule of thumb is to approach creditors with caution. Do not provide information as to your
employer or credit card numbers and bank account numbers.
- A good way to protect bank account numbers and have an audit trail of your payment is to send payments via certified mail with a cashier’s check or money order. Send them certified and "return receipt requested." Keep each and every document and receipt.
- Do not commit to paying your bills on time during this difficult period. Also take the time to send notification to your creditor that you are having difficulties in making your payments.
Make sure that any new commitments you make with your creditors are adhered to. In other
words don’t promise and then not deliver. Keep your creditors informed of any proposed changes prior to making a payment. This
debt negotiation advice will help direct you down the proper path for
self debt negotiation settlement.
