Tips to Reduce Credit Debt

Many people need money so they end up borrowing from one source or another. However in most cases that money comes from a lending institution that charges interest for allowing you to use the money. Most of the payment arrangements are set up for monthly repayment over a period of time. The lender expects you to pay the agreed dollar amount each month on time. If you are interested in reducing the debt you owe so you can move on with your life here are some great tips to reduce credit card debt:

  • Sit down and plan a budget where you only spend your income on necessities. This means you pay in cash only and avoid using your credit cards for any luxuries. If you don’t have the money to purchase something then you do without it. Avoid using your credit cards to pay for things regardless of how much they cost.
  • You can also apply for a home equity loan to pay off the other loans you have. This will leave you with one monthly payment but keep in mind that your home will be used as collateral until the balance has been paid in full.
  • It may be reasonable for you to get a second job on a short term basis to generate additional income. The extra cash can be used to pay the principal on the loans you have further reducing the total amount of interest you will pay over the life of the loan.
  • An alternative to getting a second job is selling items in your home that you no longer need. Holding a garage sale can be profitable as can taking the items to a local pawn shop. You may also consider selling them on Ebay.
  • You can also look into debt consolidation or a debt elimination program of some sort.
  • If you have no other options left you may end up having to file for bankruptcy. It can offer you protection against creditors but be aware that if you do file for bankruptcy you will be on the blacklist for about 7 to 10 years making it extremely hard to get any type of loan during that period of time.

There are some lenders out there willing to give individuals a second chance though. It is simple it really isn’t easy to reduce the amount of debt you have.  But it is worth it to know you have a secure credit rating.
